Esta familia esta conformada por 19
géneros y cerca de 185 especies. La familia presenta una enorme variabilidad en
formas de crecimiento, como ejemplo se puede citar la única conífera parásita (Parasitaxus
ustus), las coniferas más pequeñas (Lepidothamnus), así como enormes
árboles de hasta 50m de altura (Dacrydium). La familia se distribuye
principalmente en el hemisferio sur, y el género mas numeroso en especies es
Podocarpus (100 spp.).
En Chile existen 5 especies nativas repartidas en 3
géneros, uno de ellos monotípico (Saxegothaea).
